Why?

Inspired by the New York Times article on July 21, "Shoppers on a 'Diet' Tame the Urge to Buy", I have decided to implement the 30 day/six item wardrobe. The original "Sixers" tried their experiment from June 21 through July 21. This project begins in August and will end 30 days later. Here, a little bit less will archive the experiment.

My fashion philosophy is pretty simple: I feel that all bright colors match, dry cleaning is the devils work, comfort (I mostly wear Dansko's from August to June) and functionality (ie pockets) are necessities.

I am intrigued by the concept of "six items or less" because I've recently come to realize that I pick up little clothing items here and there pretty regularly (whether from second hand shops or sale racks) and this little bit adds up. More to the point, however, I am hoping that simplifying my wardrobe and imposing some austerity in my fashion-life will facilitate similar measures in other areas of my life (namely more mindful choices when spending money on food, entertainment, friends, and family).

the purpose:
  • Limit consumption: take the concept of less from wardrobe and extend to other areas of life
  • Save, save, save.
the goal:
  • Wear the same six items (or ten items if you are LS) over the course of 30 days (while maintaining creativity and my respective personal style)

  1. What's funny to me is that after I read this article, I realized I sort of do this anyway. I get in the flow with an outfit or two and wear them over and over. . . like a uniform. But I still buy things! Please post pictures of creativity in action. . . I for one cannot wait to see!
